  1. As you get older, wearing glittery makeup can get more difficult. If you apply it wrong, you can end up looking like a clown instead of the glamorous fashionista you were really hoping for.

Let's ask the professionals how it's done...

  2. Red lipstick is hot, in your face, and never goes out of style. It begs for attention yet remains classy and sophisticated. However, red is not created equal for everyone. When choosing a red lipstick color, remember that it’s all about the skin tone.

Cool Skin: you have pink undertones and probably look better in silver jewelry and can only wear certain reds, you are a brunette, bright redhead, or platinum blonde

If you are cool skin, choose reds that have pink undertones: pink tones of red, berry reds, wine and plum reds

Warm Skin: you have yellow or olive undertones and look better in gold jewelry

If you are warm skin, choose orangey reds, tomato reds, brown based reds, golden reds, tawny reds, brick reds

Note that blue toned reds can make your teeth look whiter, and you should never match your lipstick to your red clothing!

  3. A video tutorial on how to get a gorgeous purple and brown smoky eye.
  4. We all know how powerful the sun is when it comes to our skin. But did you know that UV rays are actually harder on our hair than chlorine and blow drying?

The sun can damage your hair by depleting the levels of protein - keratin - that keep your hair strong. When keratin is damaged, your hair shafts weaken and can become easily damaged. They then fail to reflect light which makes your hair appear dull. The sun can also suck the moisture and oil out of your hair. Normal moisture levels are around 8%, but sun damage brings it to about 2%. The result is hair with brittle split ends.

You can fight this battle by always wearing a hat when outdoors to protect your locks. Combine the hat with a heavy duty conditioner and your hair is no match for the sun!

This summer, make sure to take care of your hair the proper way, so that it remains strong and healthy.
  5. Here's a little known fact: most people overdose on shampoo. It's true! The fact is, large amounts of shampoo are not only unnecessary, but wasteful and drying to your hair.

When shampooing, people tend to focus on the entire length of the hair, from scalp to the ends. But the truth is, the length of your hair generally is not very dirty, and by overwashing it, you can dry it out. The main thing to be concerned about when shampooing is cleansing the scalp.

If your scalp is oily, you may need to wash your hair every day. If your scalp is dry, you can usually get away with washing it 3-4 times a week. Just think about how much time you will save in the morning by not having to wash and dry and then style your hair every single day!

  6. Ever heard of Argan Oil? Yeah, me either! Turns out it's a well known oil in Morocco, coming from Argan nuts, and was mostly used for cooking until the recent past.

Once people realized that it could be used to keep your skin glowing and wrinkle-free, the cold pressed versions started popping out for people to try. Argan oil is full of fatty acids, Vitamin E and Carotenes. It also doesn't clog pores which makes it a versatile oil for all skin types.

Argan oil is a golden yellow color but doens't boast that great of a smell. If you can tolerate a less than fragrant scent, it is worth the endurance. Also important to note: don't use cooking grade oil for your skin. Cold pressed oil and cooking oils are different grades. Always use cold pressed oils with your skin.

  7. Apr, 2010 by TeamPP on Herbs & Ingredients, Natural Organic ProductsPegaga the hero of the rainforest

Although more and more cosmetics companies are offering natural beauty products made from herbs and other organic ingredients, few have yet incorporated one of the most powerful beauty boosting herbs: pegaga (Centilla Aesthetica).

Known throughout Asia as “Miracle Hero of the Rainforest”, pegaga is a member of the parsley family and grows wild alongside ordinary grass.

About the size of a thumbnail, its clover-like leaves are inconspicuous; but this belies their true capabilities. When used topically or orally, pegaga leaves possess several qualities that cause a chain of beneficial effects in the body.

  8. Aging skin is something that no woman wants to deal with, but unfortunately it is inevitable for all of us. When Father Time has got you down, fight back with this walnut and almond facial mask:

1 tsp cold pressed walnut oil
    8-10 almonds
    1 drop geranium essential oil

Grind the almonds and mix them with the other ingredients until you get a thick paste. Apply on face (avoid eye area) and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Walnuts and almonds are powerhouse nuts; good for the heart, health, and overall wellness. But they also pack quite a bit of Vitamin E and omega 3 fatty acids which makes them your skin's best friend. People with aging or dehydrated skin will reap the most benefits from this mask. Use once a week.

We know how hard it is to find time to make your own product and also sometimes its hard to find the organic ingredients so we can make it easy by providing great organic products that will come directly to your door. No muss, no fuss.

  9. With summer fast approaching, the humidity will rise with the temperatures, making the unsuspecting person's hair turn into a frightful frizz ball. Not to worry, I am here to provide a solution and you don't even need to leave your house!

To make a homemade conditioner, take 2 egg yolks beaten well, 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, and 1/3 cup olive oil. Mix all of these ingredients together and apply to hair. Rinse off after 30 minutes. This is a great treatment for dandruff as well because of the olive oil and apple cider vinegar which are good remedies for flakiness. Egg yolk is a great protein conditioner and moisturizer that repairs split ends and makes your hair silky and soft.

Use this treatment once a week for shiny, beautiful locks!

  10. Good hair is not just what you put on it, but nourishing it from the inside as well. Below are 3 superfoods that will help give you those shiny, gorgeous locks that everyone desires:

    1. Yogurt - loaded with probiotics (healthy bacteria that live in your gut and strengthen your immune system), proteins, calcium, B vitamins and minerals, it restores the moisture and strength back to your hair. Choose plain yogurt with live cultures, and sweeten with honey. Stay away from artificially sweetened ones
    2. Salmon - this omega 3 fatty acid rich powerhouse is great for your hair. Paired with high amounts of zinc, it is a potent elixir for skin and hair. It also helps hair growth and hair loss because it is rich in niacin, which increases scalp circulation while healing and nourishing the hair. If you are not a big fish eater, a fish supplement could be another option
    3. Egg Yolk - egg yolk is packed with biotin, pantethonic acid, and vitamin A. This is the perfect cocktail combination for your hair. It moisturizes and strengthens brittle hair.

These vitamins must be present in your food if you want healthy hair: A, B, E, C, Iron, Zinc, Folic Acid, and Protein. The foods listed above have a healthy combination of all of these so get to the grocery store and stock up on shiny hair supplies!

  11. We all know that to have clear and happy skin we need to stay away from sugar, salt and alcohol, drink plenty of water, and get plenty of rest. But sometimes, sleepless nights are inevitable, or parties that are too-much-fun-we-can't-leave-until-the-sun-rises happen. In those particular cases, there are 5 things you can do to help you look more awake and refreshed than you actually feel...

    Before Bed:

    • Celebrities tend to work 20-hour days several days in a row yet still mange to look fantastic. So do what they do. Elevate your head during sleep, drink tons of water, and minimize sugar and salt intake
    • If you wake up with dehydrated skin, then you're not doing the right nighttime routine. Before you go to bed, cleanse, tone, and use a serum for any skin issues you may have, then moisturize

    When You First Wake Up:

    • Pop your eye cream or an eye mask in the refrigerator for five minutes to make it cool. Not too cold though; that may pop blood vessels. Leave it on for 20 minutes. You can also use cold tea bags. Black or chamomile teas are best for their anti-inflammatory properties. Make tea, drain excess, pop in fridge and once cool, place on lids
    • When you put your eye cream on, do a light massage on the eye area to increase circulation
    • Exercise if you have time to get your circulation going. Hang upside down or do downward dog -- it'll help reverse the blood flow and help with dark circles

Has anyone tried these tips and found that they help?

  12. Hair loss is a frightening thing in a woman. We spend countless hours and money perfecting our luscious locks. A great deal of our beauty routine is invested in making our hair look its best.

Hair loss can occur for a variety of reasons. Stress, sickness, environmental pollutants, improper diet and thyroid issues can cause dramatic hair loss. If your hair is falling out at an alarming rate, it is advisable to visit your doctor to have your thyroid tested.

There are 3 aromatherapy oils that play an important role in hair loss recovery:

    1. Rosemary
    2. Cedarwood
    3. Lavender

Combining these three oils will reduce your hair loss and make your hair stronger and healthier. To make a blend for your hair, combine 20 oz of jojoba oil in a glass jar, then add 3 drops of each of the oils and shake well. Massage your scalp with this oil for 5 minutes, then leave on for an hour to set. Shampoo.

Has anyone tried this formula for hair loss? We'd love to hear your comments!

  13. Choosing a blush color can be a daunting task - if you go too bright you can end up looking like a clown. If you go too dark you can end up looking washed out and unhealthy. And with so many options: pink, rose, tawny, shimmery....where is a girl to start? Well. I'm here to help. Earth Beauty blush brush

To find the right blush color for your skin tone, pinch your cheeks. This will recreate the flushed color your face gets after a hard workout. This is the color that goes best with your skin tone and that you need to match. Another way to match is to pick a blush that is one shade darker than your favorite neutral lip color. If you have acne or rosacea, try a tawny color as a pink one will call attention to the redness. And it should be noted that a shimmery blush almost never looks natural.

It's a good idea to start with a cream. They are easier to blend and go on more sheer, thus decreasing the chance of mistake.

When applying the product, place the color just outside the fattiest part of the cheek. You want to avoid putting color too close to the eyes, nose and temples, as it will make your face look more done up than it really is.

    Happy blushing!

  14. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) has a mission to promote and protect organic trade in North America. This is to benefit the environmOrganic Trade Associationent, farmers and consumers. OTA's goal is to make organic products a common part of every day life which will enhance our quality of life and protect the environment.

OTA is key in regulating the market where these organic products are sold. They accomplish this goal through a variety of means:

  15. It has recently come to my attention that the Vitamin E Oil that JASON markets is using synthetic Vitamin E.

Another blogger had suspicions about the ingredient list and contacted the company to ask whether or not they are using synthetics. The response? YES THEY ARE! Unbelievable. So why does it say "natural" on the bottle??

This just goes to prove once again how carefully we need to read labels and be aware of what we put on our skin and in our bodies. It frustrates me that we are constantly being lied to and deceived by these companies who only want to sell their products, not improve our well-being. I will no longer support this company in my organic journey. I do not appreciate being lied to when I rely on pure and natural ingredients for my face!

There are so many sources for extracting real Vitamin E that there is no need to use synthetics. In fact, studies have proven that using synthetics causes liver, skin and hormonal imbalances. Opt for products that only use ingredients in their pure and natural form!

Remember you can always go to EWG and look up a product to see how they rate it.

  16. One of the best parts about being a girl is all the makeup we have at our fingertips, and the wide variety of looks that we can create from the same palette.

This exotic look is inspired by feathery, sweeping brush strokes and jewel-toned colors. I absolutely love it. It's unique and beautiful and bold, yet soft and lovely. I haven't tried it yet, but if you manage to pull it off let me know!!! It would be perfect makeup for a dressy gala or fancy event.

  17. Using organic cosmetics is good for you - most of us know that. But here is a list of 5 reasons that dive a little deeperOrganic foundation and that you may not have thought of before:

    1. You will lessen your chances of having an allergic reaction to them. Many people have found that certain cosmetics have triggered asthmatic reactions that cease when using organic makeup.
    2. You will avoid the use of chemicals. Organic foundation creams are non-clogging which allows the skin to breathe since they do not contain oils or fillers which are responsible for clogging the skin. This is also the reason as to why there is virtually no risk of allergy.
    3. Organic based cosmetics do not contain talc. Talc dries up the skin and makes it appear dull. It also moves around on the face and falls into the tiny cracks on the face causing the lines to become more prominent.
    4. Organic cosmetics have anti-inflammatory properties that helps keep the skin calm and even-toned.
    5. Foundation powders containing Mica are natural illuminators that reflect light and reduce the appearance of pores and wrinkles.

Don't be overwhelmed by this information if you haven't made the switch to organics yet. Even making just one step at a time, like switching to organic foundation, can reap huge benefits for your skin! Focus on small changes first, and then as you learn more, you can incorporate that education into your makeup routine.

  18. Have you ever read the labels on your shampoo bottles? Aside from most ingredients that you won't be able to pronounce, I am sure you will Organic shampoosee sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium benzoate amidst the crowd. These harmful chemicals are found in almost all shampoos that you buy off the shelves. They are credited with hair follicle damage, eye damage, and liver toxicity.

Shampoo usage over the years only means that your body is constantly exposed to these chemicals. To decrease toxicity in your body, use natural shampoo and hair products to ensure your hair and skin will only absorb what is pure and from the earth. It's much better to choose a bottle whose label reads like this: purified water, aloe vera extract, coconut oil, fruit and herbal extracts (rosemary, birchleaf, chamomile, sage, yarrow, parsley nettle, cherry bark) vitamin E, vitamin B1, grapefruit seed extract, citric acid, soy panthenol.

Pick up a sample of a great natural shampoo here. It has a fruity-herby scent that will make your hair smell wonderfully exotic!

  19. Dealing with frizzy hair is an every day occurence for a lot of women. I am one of those who was blessed (and I use this term loosely) with curly/wavy hair. What does that mean? Well, my hair care routine is pretty quick and pretty low-maintenance, which I love. But since I live in a perpetually humid climate, it means that I am CONSTANTLY trying to tame the fuzz and fly aways. It gets pretty aggravating. And nothing ever seems to work - no matter how great the marketing or how promising the product. Frizzy hair

Maybe my problem is that I haven't turned to organics for the answer yet. All of the other products I have tried (and there have been countless) only leave my hair looking oily and lifeless. So I'd rather just deal with the frizz than flat and dull locks.

I found that Organic Cosmetics offers a defrizzing balm by Paul Penders. This serum is completely organic and uses only plant based ingredients and essential oils. It can combat even the nastiest of frizzies and leave hair silky and sleek. It's pretty concentrated so only a few drops are needed.

Has anyone tried this product? What are your thoughts?

  20. Our skin is the largest organ we have in our body, not to mention our first layer of protection against the elements. I just read a statistic that over a lifetime, we absorb about 30 pounds of what we put on our skin. That includes cosmetics, moisturizers, sunscreens, etc. 30 pounds!!! Where do you think this goes?

Organic cosmetics are, by nature, hypoallergenic. This means no more irritating skin rashes, red bumps, or other awful maladies. Over time, the stress your skin is put under by dealing with harsh chemicals and preservatives will start to show. You will lose any healthy glow you once had as your skin becomes dull and tired from protecting itself against harmful chemicals. Switching to organic means you give your skin a break from constantly fighting against something it was never supposed to have on in the first place.

But it doesn't stop with the skin. Once products are absorbed by the skin, they then travel through the blood stream and have to be filtered out through the liver and kidneys. Since our bodies were not designed to come into contact with so many harsh substances, most of our kidneys and livers are overworked at trying to detoxify our bodies. And the process is never ending, since most of us use these harmful products every day.

Let's give our bodies a well deserved break ladies!

  21. The dangers of anti-perspirants is something I have already covered in this blog. And I provided you with a healthy deodorant stickSage deodorant as an alternative. But I was leaving a very important group out! The sprayers!

What about those of you who prefer the spray anti-persipirants? Is there no hope for you?

Do not despair - I bring good news. There is a deodorant body spray that is healthy, free of harmful aluminum, and full of yummy oils and natural ingredients to soothe your skin while working WITH your body to eliminate toxins. I think the key word here is "with" and not "against". Plus, with ingredients like lavender, aloe vera, sandalwood, and patchouli, there is no way your body is going to emit anything other than a lovely fragrance.

Samples are a great way to try something out without investing all of your money. Pick up a sample size here.

  22. Wearing false lashes is a fun way to make your eyes stand out and command attention in a dramatic way. But putting them on can be quite a tricky process. Check out this video by one of my favorite makeup bloggers as she shows you an easy way to get those lashes to stick and look great.

  23. As you come on this organic journey with me, and over time learn the ingredients found in regular cosmetics versus organic, it's interesting to note that the cosmetic industry thrives with virtually no regulation. The FDA lets them parade about, including whatever ingredients they wish in your deodorant, shampoo, and makeup. So that means that there were no pre-market testing or health studies conducted before the products were placed on the shelves.

The nonprofit Environmental Working Group aims to bring public awareness to these issues. One way they have done this is by discovering that ingredients deemed by the US government as known carcinogens are in 1 out of 120 personal care products. This means that 1 in every 13 women is exposed carcinogenic materials every single day through the use of these products.

Those are horrifying statistics. That is why it is so very important to be an informed consumer and know what is in your products!!

  24. I wrote an earlier post several weeks back about how to make your lipstick last longer. I have Lipstick
discovered that if I use lip liner and high quality organic lipstick my "look" will last for hours
longer than regular lipstick. Adding some mineral pegment to the lip can also help you lipstick
stay fresh and alive. Let me know if you have tried the powder step before.
  25. Exfoliating your skin is an important step in your skin care routine that is often the most overlooked in the process. It's important Exfoliating skin
to exfoliate because your skin develops new skin cells every 2-4 weeks, and then the dead skin cells on top will need to slough off in order to allow the newer skin cells to flourish and breathe. If this process is done perfectly, you will have a constant rotation of new skin cells always on the top layer of your skin, providing you with a young and heathly complexion.

However most of the time, these dead skin cells do not get sloughed off and end up clogging your pores and inhibiting the new skin cells from doing their job. Avoid this nastiness by exfoliating once a week to keep your skin healthy.

    How to exfoliate:

    Dampen your skin
Put some of the exfoliating cream on your fingertips, and gently massage your face in small, circular motions
    Rinse skin thoroughly
    Follow with a moisturizer

You can see it's quite simple! Here's a great exfoliating product full of sandalwood and grapefruit seed extract to soothe your skin.

  26. One of the major causes of our skin looking aged and weary is the loss of collagen in our face. Mukti Antioxidant facial oilWhen our cells aren't functioning properly, they lose their ability to regenerate collagen, and therefore our skin suffers because of it.

Antioxidant Facial Oil Mukti is a really great product to reverse those signs of aging. The oils are nourishing and increases your skin's elasticity because of ingredients like pomegranate and evening primrose. With its moisture retention properties, it can be a great tool for fighting wrinkles and maintaining a supple and fresh appearance.

To use, apply in the evening after cleansing and toning. Squeeze a few drops onto your fingertips and gently press into your face and neck. Also great to use for facial massages and to remove eye makeup. It's best to use at night because of the lavender and sandalwood oils, which will calm your skin and relax your muscles.

Let me know how you like this product if you decide to try it out! I'm especially interested in the eye makeup remover part, as I can never seem to fully remove my waterproof mascara.

  27. I recently spoke on our other blog of organic packaging and how it goes hand in hand with organic products.

Well check out this company: Megaplast. They have recently engineered a new kind of dispenser specifically for organic products. Their Self-Sealing Actuator System “protects products from impurities and contamination through a membrane in the pump’s orifice that automatically seals once the formula has been dispensed. This prevents the product from coming into contact with oxygen, thereby reducing contamination, discoloration and product dry-out, and ultimately, increasing shelf life and effectiveness.”

Since organics have a short shelf-life anyway, this is great news for us!

  28. Synthetic fragrances can have up to 200 ingredients, just contained in that one label. There is no way to know what exactly they are either, since by law the manufacturer does not have to specify.

However this seemingly innocent word can cause a host of problems physically: vomiting, dizziness, nausea and skin irritations to name a few. These petrochemicals have also been known to trigger asthma.

This can turn into a huge problem if you work in an enclosed office space with multiple women who wear synthetic fragrances. Often the only way to remedy the situation is to step outside for some fresh air. If you find yourself in this situation, discuss with your colleagues the option of switching to essential oils as a fragrance staple.

  29. A common complaint among women is dealing with puffy eyes after not getting enough rest. potatoeThere are many ways to alleviate this problem with cosmetics, but I bet you never thought about using something from your root vegetable bowl. Next time, try a potato! Not kidding. Just slice up a raw spud and put it on your eyelids for an instant puffiness reduction.

Maybe you have swollen feet? Get a box of dehydrated mashed potatoes and make according to the directions on the box. Add warm water and soak your feet! The potatos will pull the puffiness out of your feet and soften your skin on top of that. Who says you have to buy expensive products to look good??

You may never look at a potato the same way again...

  30. Sometimes we just have days where we are low on energy and every single task seems to take everything we've got. Organic lemonsIt's during moments like this that it's important to have solutions at your fingertips that will perk you up and get a smile on your face.

Aromatherapy is renowned for many things, and being used as an energy booster is just one of the many great things it offers. There are 6 scents noted for their energizing effects:

    • Lemon/Orange - uplifting and mood-elevating
    • Peppermint - mental stimulant
    • Balsam Pine - vitality promoting
    • Rosemary - invigorating
    • Thyme - refreshing

A good way to make use of these scents is to place some drops of oil on a light bulb, and as the bulb burns the oil will release its scent. You can also boil a pot of water filled with thyme and rosemary, and your house will be filled with an upbeat energy. Also, purchase peppermint scented candles and burn when you are feeling sluggish.

It's much better for your body if you reach for an herb or essential oil than a cup of coffee to wake up your senses! Live well and be well my friends.

  31. My skin is really dry. Like, absurdly dry. I have to apply body and face moisturizer every single day in order to avoid that flaky, ashy look that is so embarrassing. I live in the southern part of Texas, and if I even go so much as 4 hours north, my skin drains of moisture and I get itchy. You know when your skin is dry and it feels like you have a thousand bugs crawling all over you? Yeah, that is water being sapped from your body. Not a pleasant feeling.

So I'm always on the lookout for a heavy duty moisturizer that WON'T sit on my skin like an oily blanket. You know the types: they claim to have oodles of hydrating benefits but they never absorb! So you're left with this shiny, oily film that doesn't seep in to your skin and proceeds to rub off on to anything you touch, from clothes to your just washed bed sheets. Annoying.

In browsing around for some creams that are the antithesis of what I stated above, I happened upon Ceramide Recovery. It's full of essential oils which hydrate the skin and bonus, firm the skin as well. So after repeated use you will end up with smoother, firmer skin. It's packed with Vitamin E which is an important skin nutrient, and Vitamin C for that free radical fighting power. And it's specially made for extra dry skin. A dream come true!

What are some of your favorite dry skin moisturizers?

Don't have dry skin? Click here for other products.

  32. Let's talk deodorant. If you have been a "member" of the organic world for some time now, then I'm sure you are privy to the harmful effects of aluminum in anti-perspirant. This nasty metal has been linked to breast cancer and lymphoma in women. Considering the area of application and the frequency, this doesn't really come as a surprise to me. The purpose of an anti-perspirant is exactly that: to prevent you from perspiring. So what that means is that harmful toxins in your body normally eliminated via sweat no longer get eliminated. So the toxins stay in your body. Not a great thought.

But there is another option! You can choose natural deodorant, which will allow you to perspire, but masks the less than rosy scent while you do so. Using natural deodorant means you stay away from harmful chemicals, and it is also easier on those of you with sensitive skin or skin allergies. Click here to find a good list of organic products.

  33. Last week I gave a brief tutorial on using the right colors to bring out your green eyes. Now watch this great video on enhancing your natural emerald greenies. Although she talks about various companies that have chemicals in their makeup we still think there is value in watching this video but hope that you would choose organic mineral makeup available on this site.

And find the colors you need to achieve this look here.

    Enjoy!

  34. So, you have eyes like rich emeralds and want to play them up even more? No problem. All you need is the right color combination to make them even more fierce.

The best colors for enhancing green eyes are purple, coppery browns, gold and chocolate. The best choices in color can be found here in our Loose Powder Eye Shadow Earths Beauty line. Purple is on the opposite side of the spectrum wheel from green which is why they are such complimentary colors.

The first step is to cover your entire lid with a muted brown as a base. Then smudge a vibrant lilac or amethyst colored purple along your lid but not going above the crease. Take you your coppery brown or chocolate color (depending on how dramatic you want the look to be) and use that color to fill your crease. Be sure to not layer over the purple shadow however as it is key to making your green eyes pop. Blend any harsh lines so that you have a smooth, pulled together look.

With your eye liner brush, dip it into a deep plum color and line the lower half of your lashes with this color. Finish off with mascara and admire your bold green eyes!

  35. Kabuki Brush

There are numerous types of makeup brushes. Similarities and differences are generally experienced by the hardness or stiffness of the brush. Animals bristles are soft and used to create a more comfortable, thin and soft color. Tightly tied and dense bristles are used to apply more product for color saturation and density.

The quality of a brush, cut of the bristles, flexible, can all change how it will serve your purpose. Most people like the soft animals hair brushes for foundation and blush application. For use as an eye liner application a stiffer bush works best so you have control over how the line will contour with your eye. Nothing is worse than having your eye liner end up where it is not wanted.

Having a variety of brushes and experimenting with them will help give you a good idea of which brush you favour. Soon you will have your favourites and know exactly how to use them proficiently.

The price of brushes or brush sets vary so much on the internet that it is difficult to be sure which brush will give you quality and best price but here are some things to consider. Most people I talk to say they don’t want to use animal hair unless it is harvested humanly. Goat hair for example is the most popular. It has a great texture for foundation or blush application. Manmade fibres are tougher and flexible so they are best for eye liner or lipstick. Using the right brush for you is invaluable in reducing the time spent in the morning putting on "your face".

Have some fun with brush application and see which ones you fall in love with!

  38. As we destroy our natural ozone we will need to be more aware of how the sun affects our skin and health. There has been great concern by day care centers, schools and others groups who are responsible for child safety. They have been the thrust of the need to use sunscreen in an effort to protect the children and avoid law suits. Even to the point that they have told parents in no uncertain terms that they would be looked upon as irresponsible parents if they do not apply and supply sunscreen for their child each and every day.

I agree, but only in principle. I am not pointing a finger at the day care providers for they can only work within the regulations and the parent’s wishes. My daughter and I have had many children in our daycare and after school programs that we encouraged to apply sunscreen (often using the daycare’s sunscreen) so that we were compliant and didn’t have sunburned children. The problem is that although you must protect the child from getting sun burned, the means for accomplishing that can be as harmful as the suns rays. Dare I say most sunscreens contain toxic chemicals? It would be a shock if you thought you are doing the right thing for everyone involved and then found out years later you had not been properly informed and found the toxins where effecting peoples health. You may be wondering how your good intentions could have gone so wrong. How was this was allowed to happen?

The Environmental Working Group’s Executive Director, Richard Wiles, issued the following statement:
“FDA’s been dragging its feet on sunscreen safety standards for more than 30 years. Meanwhile, most Americans are not adequately protected: A recent EWG study found that 85% of sunscreens we tested do not offer enough protection from UV rays, are made with potentially harmful ingredients, or have not been tested for safety. We applaud Sen. Dodd, but Congress shouldn’t have to force FDA to do its job.”
I want to support the companies that have gone the extra mile to give us products that were good for us from the beginning. Companies that produce a superior sunscreen without waiting for law suits or consumer pressure to take chemicals out of the products. They knew that additives were not benefiting our health. Statistics state that 3 of 5 brand-name sunscreens either don’t protect skin from sun damage or contain hazardous chemicals — or both.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) are constantly testing and lobbying for accountability in product creation. They have a great website that shows all sunscreen products tested (1,625 of them) and you can find out how your sunscreen scores. Many products I thought were safe are shown to be harmful. The one that really surprised me with a bad score was baby sunscreen called Huggies Little Swimmers. Get informed and take charge of your purchasing power while improving your health at the same time.

    Who knew?

Several natural skin care companies knew, Environmental Working Group knew, and even the companies that put the toxins in their sunscreen knew. It’s hard not to trust Huggies or L’Oreal just a little when they say you are safe and protected. Who doesn’t want to hear that? Marketing corporation with large budgets are not given lie detector tests when they create ads and labels. Corporate America is not covering your back.

How do I know that these companies have some understanding of the toxic side effects of their products? Because they are now modifying their formulas in an effort to secure their hold on market shares. They will modify the sunscreen just enough so they can put “natural” or “new improved” on the labels in the hope that you will continue to use the brands you have trusted for years. But awareness is rising and we just won’t buy the products that are not safe with blind confidence like we did in the past. Your dollars do talk and our power lies in the fact that we can decide who to support.

I will give a vote of support and confidence to people with awareness and ability to create beneficial products for me and the environment. The time to act is now and we are primed to redirect our attention toward our health and that of the planet. Organic products are a future we can all live with.

  39. It is no surprise that the cosmetic industry is a 344 million dollar a year industry. They are pushing every button they can to convince you that you need to use their products or you won't be sexy and lovable. What a bunch of garbage - but we are listening and we are buying. I heard an ad the other day that was so convincing that it made me doubt (only for a half a second) my current knowledge and awareness around skin care.

They are out to get you hooked on their products to reduce your wrinkles and save your marriage. I know I sound cynical but for heaven sake they are not giving us the whole truth about the chemicals and their detrimental effect on our bodies. Sure your skin may look just a tad more alive but in the long run... and at what price? I have noticed over the years that it is not always the effectiveness of the product but the fact that you have decided to direct more energy toward your face and skin. Cleaning and toning every night and using organic quality moisturizers (AM) and (PM) twice a day really does help your skin. I only use organic creams and toners so I know that I am not putting a increasing the work load that my skin is already processing to element unwanted chemicals. I have done a lot of research on cosmetics and the ingredients that are used and it just makes my skin crawl to think what our medical care situation will be after 20 years of toxic poising from these companies. Do you remember Noxema in the 60's so fresh and invigorating? They took it off the market because it had an effect on hormones (they say). Well I am here to tell you that the amount of very young girls now wearing makeup are definitely having their hormones disturbed and this could reduce their chance of having children.

As a Natural Health Consultant I am bios with a capital B and I don't hide that fact but my opinions are not dollar driven and I am concerned about the hormones imbalances, the cancer, the autoimmune diseases that are gaining ground through our aging population.

    What do you think?

  40. Well things have been very interesting and busy around here putting up a new site and researching like I was about to write a Pulitzer. The one thing that kept coming up big and bold is the important of "ORGANIC" sunscreen. I hear mothers talk about not letting their children go out without sunscreen. Parents of little ones are asked to make sure there is a tube of sunscreen in their childs back pack if they go to day care. Well I have been researching - what else - Skin... Some interesting facts: the deep layers of skin move the skin cells to the top where they are finally shed. We loose tens of thousand of skin cells each day and of course the old dead cells that fall off are a large contributor to what we call house dust. It's a great idea to keep you skin soft and healthy and free of toxins because your skin breaths like your lungs do. Well back to the importance of organic sunscreen! Can you just imagine what the skin has to go through to move the toxins away from the skin and into the blood stream for storage or elimination. I shutter to think of all those little children being smothered in sunscreen lotion with the idea that their little bodies are being protected from the dangerous sun rays and all the while we are adding to the chemical load of their little systems. I have even seen a mother chastised with accusations of neglect when her child was let outside without the "safety" of sunscreen. It's important to protect the skin - don't get me wrong. There is a better way - an organic way - that can give you and your children the best of both worlds - protection from the burning sun and non toxic - waterproof UV 30 sunscreen. For adult and children alike - Take a look.
  41. I was asked about the term Organic. Some companies have put names on their products like Natural, New organics, or put the name organic into their company name. Not because their product IS organic but as a way to fool the public into thinking they are buying a healthy product, when in fact it can mean anything but organic. Consumers are getting label savvy and we want organic - if not certified organic - to be up front and center. There are regulatory bodies who certify companies that go the extra mile to create products that can be certified organic, kosher or fair trade and the price of this quality is reflected in the price of course. If a products is 95% organic then it can be called "certified organic" and we can usually be certain that we are buying quality. Many products and marketers are realizing that the consumer is now looking for organic skin care, body care and food and beverages to insure we are using products that support health. The rise in dis-ease and various illnesses is coincidentally in direct proportion to the amount of drugs we have created and are using for food and cosmetics. Don't get me started on the earth's water issue......
  42. Many of you have heard all the debate about lipstick being toxic. Does it contain too much lead - I wonder how much that is? How are they coloring lipstick and what do they use for this? Beetles??

Are animals right activist upset about the beetles being ground up for the really red lipstick? Can you still call that vegan cosmetics? Are we just being way too radical or do the pounds of lipstick we eat in a lifetime really make a difference to our livers? As the debate rages on, my question to you is "Will we ever get the straight goods on lipstick and cosmetics?" Probably not! L'Oreal, Mac, Christian Dior are not about to confess they have been feeding us chemicals for years that may have long term side effects. By the time we prove it - well, it's all over isn't it? They stand by their statements such as "we are confident our products are within safe limits" - even as they modify their formulas.

Yikes, let me out of here! So we are all too darn busy to weed through the data and I don't trust we can get good information from anyone who has a vested interested in profits.
